The Chief Joseph Highway, named for the last chief of the Nez Perce Indians, runs from Wyoming Route 120 south of Belfry, Montana to Cooke City, Montana. Passing across Dead Indian Pass and through Sunlight Basin, you will view dramatic red rock mesas and deep gorges. You pass through spectacular ranch country and enjoy breathtaking alpine views. This drive makes up a leg of the Beartooth - Chief Joseph Loop which is a long half-day drive. There are opportunities to get out and walk, and several numbered dirt roads go into the semi-arid rangeland of the Sunlight Basin that also bring you to dramatic views. Watch for wildlife along this route, as you will not be far from bears, mountain lions, eagles, as well as more common species.
