Start your day with the sun rising at your back as you begin the spectacular drive over the Beartooth Pass. The Beartooth Mountains extend themselves before you, and soon you are among them as you wind your way above treeline, bound for 11,000 feet. Opposite, on the north side of the valley, you will see the Hellroaring Plateau, said to be the world's largest plateau above 10,000 feet in elevation. You can then stop at Vista Point and walk out to the viewing area to get a sense of the scale of the valley below. There are many other viewing areas where you will want to stop and take in the panoramic scenery and the wildflowers. Look for marmots and pikas, and other creatures you may not see at home. If there's snow, there will often be skiers descending what looks like a sheer cliff face. At the summit the views are endless. Bring a warm jacket, because it can be windy and cold on the pass when it's hot in Red Lodge. And bring your camera, because this highway that Charles Kuralt called "the most beautiful road in America" is an unforgettable experience.
